Osteoporosis
Who’s at risk?
There’s a popular misconception regarding osteoporosis: that it only affects older women. But this disease, characterized by loss of bone density and potential fracture, can develop in men and women, in every ethnic group.
So says an article published in the online medical site WebMD, and based on reports from findings at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. According to the article, two million men are living with the disease today, and another 12 million are at risk of developing osteoporosis. It is true that women experience more rapid bone loss than men when both are in their 50s. But by their late 60s, men and women are losing bone mass at the same rate. One-quarter of men over 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis.

Recommendations for helping to guard against the disease include getting plenty of weight-bearing exercise, a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and regular checkups by a physician.
